4 Ideas You’ll Want To Try To Make Your Living Room More Attractive

by | Aug 20, 2019 | Blog, Decorating

Your living room is where you enjoy life with your family and friends. It’s one of the first things guests will see in your home. With that in mind, it’s definitely a good idea to give it a fresh makeover every now and then. You don’t even have to do anything special – sometimes, it’s just a matter of refreshing and rearranging.

It’s not all about decor

Choosing new decor pieces every now and then is nice, but it’s good to know that it’s not all about decor. Sometimes, reorganizing what you’ve got or just hiding less attractive (but necessary) items in your living room is enough. Even lighting makes a huge difference.

#1: Speaking of lighting…

An easy way to make your living room look better is to improve your lighting situation. First of all, try to get as much natural light as possible into the room. Add a skylight, open your curtains – whatever you need to do to get plenty of light!

Whether you feel like you’re getting enough natural light or not, you can still add other light sources. For example, LED lighting is a popular solution for home lighting right now – it’s bright, energizing, and usually a more eco-friendly choice. A sleek industrial light fixture is a great way to showcase LED lighting.

If you’re looking for a lamp rather than a ceiling fixture, a lamp like this is a great choice:

#2: Hide the clutter

Of course, the first part of this step is simple: if necessary, take a day and tidy up your living room. After you’ve cleaned up the obvious clutter, turn to the less obvious things: power strips, cords, longer cords…the list goes on. For many of us, having these things in the living room is a necessity, but that doesn’t mean they always look good. One way to combat this is by coming up with creative ways to hide them.

  • Make a place for your power strip between your sofa and end table. It’ll rest on the floor within reach but out of sight.
  • Leave space on the end table and the arm of the sofa to place your phones or other devices. Then you can plug your cords into the power strip below and they’ll be effectively hidden while they charge your electronics.
  • What if you’ve got longer cords that aren’t so easy to hide? Try to make them run along the edges and corners of the room by placing them up against the floor trim. This will give the room a tidier look.
  • Finally, a cluster of cords behind a TV or computer isn’t a good look, but it’s an easy fix. Find a tablecloth, blanket, or curtain that fits into your living room design and drape it over your TV stand or computer desk, hiding the cords behind it.

#3: Help centralize your design around the right things by hiding your TV

Some parts of your living room are best for display, and others are necessary but not quite as central to your design. So, you’ll need to hide some things and showcase others.

Most likely, you don’t want to draw too much attention to your TV. Fortunately, you can easily hide even a large television with a TV cabinet. That way, you’ll have plenty of storage as well. Not interested in a TV cabinet? There are plenty of other ways to hide a TV:

  • Cover it with a painting that moves out of the way.
  • Hide it in plain sight by allowing the screen to show images constantly so that it blends in with surrounding wall art.
  • Have a cabinet built in to your wall especially for your TV.
  • Instead of a traditional TV stand, use a graceful tripod (we really like this one!)

#4: Arrange your furniture

Finally, an important part of making your living room more attractive is arranging your furniture correctly. There’s so much information out there on how to do this right; sometimes it comes down to your personal sense of style. So, we’ll include just a few general pointers on how to arrange living room furniture.

  • Before you start organizing, measure the room and create a loose plan for where each piece will go.
  • Choose a “focal point.” In other words, if you’ve got a TV going in, set up sofas and chairs so that they’re at optimal locations for watching TV. If a TV isn’t your focal point, you’ll want to focus your seating area around a central point instead. This might be a coffee table or a rug, among other options.
  • After your seating areas are set up around a focal point, you can bring in other living room furnishings like end tables. You’ll need to make them work around your sofas and chairs.
  • As a final touch, add light sources (lamps, ceiling fixtures, etc.) as needed.

Sit back and enjoy!

When you’re finished with your new living room design, don’t forget to sit back, relax, and enjoy it! After all, that’s what living rooms are for – rest and relaxation. You’ve earned it!
