Take pictures of the home as you’re moving in

We hope you already checked out the condition of the mobile home before moving in. If not, take time now to snap pictures of your new pad in case there are damages. If you’re renting, these photos prove that you aren’t responsible for existing damages like dented walls, busted pipes, faulty wiring, etc. For new-to-you purchases, you may want to show them to the seller if your contract stated that they would repair certain damages.

Get to know the neighbors

Carve out some time before, during or after moving in to introduce yourself to the neighbors. The neighbors have probably been expecting you and will be curious to see who they’ll be living next to. Consider inviting them over for dinner once you’re settled. Getting to know the neighbors is also beneficial as they can help you navigate the local area and give you a rundown of the nearby schools.

Give yourself a full day or two to unpack

This seems like an obvious tip, but it’s easy to underestimate how long it’ll take to properly set up your new home. You really don’t know how much you own until you see it all laid out before you. If you followed our tips for packing up and moving out, then hopefully this step will be much easier. Remember to keep enough wiggle room in your schedule to make conversation with passing neighbors.

Set goals

Moving into a new home can be an overwhelming endeavor, especially if you don’t know where to start. Try tackling one room at a time to make this huge project feel much more doable. This will lessen the chance of someone misplacing an item in the wrong room if you have multiple people helping you move.

Unpack the essentials first

Move whatever you think you’ll be using within hours of moving into the home first. For example, move your bed and bathroom accessories into the home first if you’re unpacking at night as you’ll want to use these before going to bed. Or if you’re moving in the morning, consider attending to the kitchen first so you’ll have the supplies needed to make a meal.

Meet with the park management team

Your park manager may operate in an office or from their mobile home. Figure this out now so you’ll know where to go in case you have a serious issue on your hands. Upon meeting with the manager, make sure to familiarize yourself with the park rules and ask any other questions you have regarding utilities and rent payments. You’ll have a much easier time getting these questions answered when you’re standing in front of them versus trying to email or call them.

Change your address

This can be easy to forget as your attention will be divided among many other tasks. Don’t push this off until you finish moving in as you might not be completely moved in for several weeks. Click here for complete instructions on how to do this.

Familiarize yourself with the utilities

Take a look at your mobile home’s water heater, pipes, circuit breaker, and other utilities that are hidden from plain sight. Familiarizing yourself with these now will help you solve repairs down the road. Take pictures of these as well in the case that there are damages upon arrival. Look for any obvious signs of leaking that could indicate needed repairs.

Change the locks

Do this as soon as possible if you’re moving into a previously used mobile home. You’ll sleep better knowing you took extra safety precautions even though it’s unlikely the previous residents will try to break in. Check out this guide on how to change your locks for more information.

Take a drive through town

Familiarize yourself with your surrounding community after you’ve moved in. Take a look at nearby grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and more to give yourself a better picture of the area. Do this as soon as possible as it’s easy to get caught up in your schedule and other daily stresses.

After moving into a mobile home, it’s time to start settling in!

Consider ordering a pizza or getting Chinese carryout to save time cooking while you’re unpacking your new home. You should also avoid trying to pull an all-nighter unpacking as sleep is your best friend – don’t neglect it! And while you’re here, take a look at our guide for setting up your mobile home utilities.
