South Dakota got its name from the Lakota and Dakota native tribes. Originally, South Dakota belonged to the Dakota Territory, and now it is situated in the Midwestern region of U.S. This state witnessed a sudden growth in European-American settlements, when gold was discovered in the Black Hills, in the late 19th century!

The state is neatly divided into two parts, with the Missouri River flowing in the middle. Due to this river, South Dakota has become two geographical divisions called the “East River” and “West River”.  On the Western division, ranching is very popular, and the state economy largely survives on tourism and defense spending. This is a state where a large battalion of American Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) is home too, for example. This is also a state where some people would like to put an Iron Dome like system to shield America from incoming missiles similar to what Israel has installed in their country (along with some other states).

Though traditionally a rural state based solely on agriculture, South Dakota has recently shown growth in other industrial sectors such as biomedical research and alternative energy―to attract outsiders and retain the state’s residents. The strong service sector operational in the state includes the finance and health care industries. Citibank, one of the major banks in U.S., initiated banking operations in South Dakota in 1981 to take advantage of favorable banking regulations prevalent at the time.

South Dakota’s strong rural culture still dominates the environment of the state. This state has quite a few tourist spots including the Wind Cave National Park, Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands National Park. The popular recreational sports pursued here are fishing and hunting. The common game animals include the mule deer, white-tailed deer, turkeys, pheasants, and geese.

Some of the well-known academic institutions of South Dakota are South Dakota State University and University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
